Reflecting Midway Through an Online Course

As QSI Virtual School students reach the midway point in their online courses, it's important for them to take time to reflect and assess their progress in their online learning.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Here are some key questions for students to think about and reflect on:

What are my biggest takeaways so far?

Take some time to ask yourself questions such as “What have I learned from this course?” or “What are my biggest takeaways so far?”. Reflective questions like these can be helpful in understanding where you stand and what needs to be accomplished for the rest of the duration of the course. Taking a few minutes to think about what has been learned so far will help you move forward with the remaining units.

Am I on track to meet my goals?

It’s important to remind yourself about what drew you to the course in the first place. If you've lost sight of your original goals, it's time to reevaluate what you want to get out of the course. Identify specific areas where you need to improve and create a plan for how you can achieve your goals.

Am I ahead of or behind schedule?

It is important to check-in and ask yourself if you are ahead of or behind the expected schedule. In order to determine if you're ahead of or behind schedule, it's helpful to review your course's pacing guide.

Am I making the most of my time?

Each QSI Virtual School student has a period in their school schedule for each online course. Are you using your time wisely? It is important to remember that if you are in an AP course, you are expected to spend approximately 90 minutes each day to stay caught up.

Have I been engaging with the course content?

To really get the most out of your online course, it's important to make sure that you are consistently engaging with the course content. If you haven't been fully engaged, think about how you can improve in this moving forward.

Am I understanding the concepts covered?

It is important to take the time to assess your overall understanding and make sure that you are on track with the class. Asking yourself certain questions can help you figure out what you don't know and what you need to learn before you move on to more study. Questions like “What do I understand so far?” and “Where am I struggling?” can provide insight into which areas need more attention or clarification. Also, taking time to read and reflect on your teacher's feedback can be very helpful.

Are my study habits effective?

Taking an online course requires a tremendous amount of dedication and commitment. It can be easy to get overwhelmed with the material and the expectations we have for ourselves, particularly if your study habits are ineffective. Consider your ability to stick to a routine, plan out your time, and ability to stay on track with course deadlines. If you are having difficulties in any of these areas, you should reach out to your school counselor or teacher for assistance.

Do I need to reach out for extra help?

If you are feeling overwhelmed with your QVS course, it may be time to reach out for some extra help. Online learning can be very challenging, especially if you have a busy academic schedule and other responsibilities and commitments.
